Week 3 Preview

We are going to try something new this week. Hopefully it goes well and we can continue with this throughout the season!

Together, each week we will decide the best games (aiming for around 5) and post our thoughts and predictions in a joint column. Then we will each pick 1-2 upsets from other games around the country. It should be fun to get a little bit of a back and forth going in this space (since Scott didn’t respond when Gavin called him out last time), as well as competing with our predictions. Hope you all enjoy it!

PS. Let it be known that we each made our predictions separately, prior to looking at each other’s.

Games of Note

#19 Iowa vs #14 Minnesota

Gavin- Big showdown in the B10 West. It was last year too, with Minnesota’s CFB hopes on the line. How’d that one end up again? Iowa 28, Minnesota 24

Scott- This was a heck of a game last season, as the Hawkeyes put a huge ding in the Gophers’ playoff campaign. Goldy gets a bit of revenge this season in a close one at home. Minnesota 30, Iowa 24

Rutgers @ Temple

Scott- Besides this battle between two undefeated former Big East foes counting for bragging rights, I’m sure the winner will hold serve as the favorite to bring in all the Northeast 5-star recruits as well next cycle. Okay, but really this is an exciting game somehow. This seems like a toss-up. Give me the home team. Temple 23, Rutgers 19

Gavin- Ooh this one is tough. These are two teams that have looked surprisingly good so far. Now, that’s not likely to last for long, but this week should be a good one anyway. In the first meeting between these two since 2013, I’ll say Rutgers steals it in a finish for the ages. Rutgers 21, Temple 20

Florida State @ Boise State

Scott- In the most unlikeliest of home and home’s, two teams from opposite ends of the country face off for the second straight year. This time it’s the 2-0 ‘Noles traveling to the smurf turf after the Broncos won the season opener last season in Tallahassee. Broncos are coming off an OT loss. Give me BSU on BIG NOON KICKOFF. Boise State 27, Florida State 11

Gavin- Bounce back game anyone? Boise State will be fuming after a narrow overtime loss to Air Force. But then again, Florida State has looked pretty good to start the year. Nah, Broncos have this one. Boise State 24, Florida State 17

#6 Georgia @ #3 Alabama

Scott- Is a Nick Saban former assistant ever going to beat him? Kirby Smart sure has had his chances the last few seasons. In Bill Connelly’s S+P plus, it’s the top rated offense in Bama going against UGA’s top defense. In the 2nd top 10 matchup this season, I expect this one to be closer than the last. Alabama 33, Georgia 24

Gavin- Game of the week. SEC showdown. Dominant performances from each team so far. You’re absolutely right Scott, this one will be close. But Bama pulls away at the end. Alabama 40, Georgia 28

Colorado @ #13 Texas A&M

Scott- Colorado looks very strong to start the Karl Dorrell tenure with two underrated wins. Jimbo Fisher’s expectations are sky high and the Aggies can’t afford to slip up now if they want to be held in regard with the big boys in the SEC West. TAMU dominates this old Big 12 battle. Texas A&M 50, Colorado 13

Gavin- Scott here’s where we disagree. Colorado’s two wins are perfectly rated, and color me unimpressed. I feel like this one is cut and dry. Texas A&M 49, Colorado 10

Houston @ #20 Memphis

Scott- These teams have been two of the better ones in the American for a while. Although Houston seems to be trending downward the last few years, they came away with a huge win last week. Will that road win vs. a Power 5 program reverse the Coogs’ trajectory? Not this week, the top dog (or cat) in the AAC is still Memphis, and they show it here. Memphis 44, Houston 26

Gavin- I doubted both of these teams last week, and at my own expense. My 3-2 record in week 1 predictions is here as evidence. But which one do I trust more here? Memphis at home gets my vote of confidence in this huge American Conference showdown. Memphis 35, Houston 31

Arizona @ Texas Tech

Scott- Somehow the Wildcats of Arizona are 3-0, getting Kevin Sumlin off the hot seat for now. The Red Raiders are also 2-0 and rather untested. This one has the potential to break the scoreboard Saturday night on Fox. Arizona 48, Texas Tech 43

Gavin- Well what have we here? A surprisingly good, 3-0 Arizona team vs a Texas Tech squad that has yet to be challenged in any way. No really, they haven’t even allowed a single point through two weeks! That ends here, but give me the Red Raiders in a blowout. Texas Tech 48, Arizona 14

Upset Picks

Scott – BYU @ Arizona State

This one is a bit bold given the fact BYU is coming off a big win and ASU is coming off a bad loss. Also, the Sun Devils are coming home to Tempe. But does college football make sense? Nope. Give me the Mormons. BYU 30, Arizona State 28

Gavin – Air Force @ Purdue

My upset picks from last week are back. But this time, I have to pick one of them to fall. Purdue, you let me down last week. Coming off an overtime squeaker against a ranked Boise State, count me in as a believer in these Falcons. Air Force 31, Purdue 24
