Our apologies for the late and out-of-order post, as some technical difficulties and holiday travel plans have backed us up so to speak. But you guys deserve a well-rounded Week 12 recap post so here you are.
Games of Note and Predictions:
#23 UCF 47 – #25 Cincinnati 37
Scott – UCF 31-24
Gavin – UCF 35-31
The Knights avenge last year’s loss to the Bearcats by defending the Bounce House. Led by Dillon Gabriel, the Knights are now firmly in the driver’s seat to reach the AAC Championship Game, leaving the Bearcats pretty much out of it.
#4 LSU 44 – #8 Auburn 17
Scott – LSU 36-28
Gavin – Auburn 31-28
Wow. That was impressive. In another Top 10 SEC matchup, LSU strolls out of Jordan-Hare with a 27 point stomping. Coach O and the Tigers are firmly in this playoff conversation now. If they can defeat A&M next week, I don’t see how they get left out. Auburn can’t lick their wounds now with a trip to Tuscaloosa next week.
#7 Wisconsin 34 – Nebraska 3
Scott – Wisconsin 42-18
Gavin – Wisconsin 45-10
In a chilly Camp Randall, Wisconsin flexed its muscles, and the B1G West champ showed why they are not to be forgotten about in the playoff chase. Nebraska barely showed a pulse in this one, and is in danger of losing out after starting 7-0.
#14 Notre Dame 32 – #15 Louisville 15
Scott – Notre Dame 47-23
Gavin – Louisville 31-28
A shockingly good matchup ended rather uneventful as the Irish controlled play from start to finish, handing the Cardinals just their second loss of the season. A massive game in the New Year’s Six race, as Notre Dame has a great shot with a quality win.
#2 Alabama 25 – #13 Texas A&M 16
Scott – Alabama 45-28
Gavin – Alabama 42-21
The Crimson Tide looked very sluggish today, and still beat the #13 team in the country by 2 possessions. That’s how talented this team really is, as they clinch the SEC West for the sixth time in nine tries. A&M now has 3 losses, but definitely something to build off of here, as they played Bama tight.
#9 Georgia 29 – #18 Kentucky 24
Scott – Georgia 23-13
Gavin – Georgia 27-10
Even though the Gators have the East wrapped up, UK brought the juice in Lexington, nearly upsetting the Dawgs. I think it’s time to admit Kentucky deserves respect year in and year out under Mark Stoops. A win is a win though for UGA, and they escaped in a tough environment. In-state ACC rivals await these two next week.
#19 Utah 33 – Arizona State 25
Scott – Utah 28-19
Gavin – Arizona State 35-31
No late-season magic in Tempe this year. Utah pulls out the win, and barring a meltdown next weekend in Boulder, will represent the Pac-12 South in Vegas. From a national perspective, ASU needs to defeat the rival Wildcats this year, as a three-game losing streak to end the regular season campaign would look very fluky. Utah has established itself as the class of the division.
#11 Texas 49 – #17 Iowa State 17
Scott – Texas 37-24
Gavin – Texas 35-17
Holy cow. (Pun.) The Horns demolish ISU in DKR to claim their ninth straight victory and clinch a berth in the Big XII Championship. With the Cyclones effectively eliminated, it will look to be a Red River rematch in JerryWorld. Texas can not be stopped at the moment, and they made a statement Saturday night.
Navy 21 – South Florida 13
Scott – South Florida 31-28
In Navy’s last game in three weeks, the Midshipmen clinch a bowl appearance under Coach Ken yet again. USF has been streaky all year, and I can never pinpoint what kind of game they will deliver. The Bulls have lost three straight with UCF next week. Yikes.
#21 Oklahoma State 39 – Kansas State 18
Gavin – Kansas State 27-21
Despite beating the Sooners last week, the Wildcats could not use that momentum to upset OSU as well. This was an impressive win for Gundy and company, as the Cowboys are trying to salvage their disappointing year.
Our Pick Results:
Scott 8-1 (65-24 overall)
Gavin 5-4 (58-31)
With Gavin reaching for a couple upsets in ranked matchups, they don’t come through as Scott picks up another three game difference, pushing his season lead to seven. Two weeks to go.
Other Games of Note:
Louisiana Tech 26 – Vanderbilt 24
Geez Vandy. We knew you were bad, but show a little life for your soon to be departing coach Derek Mason. Turmoil in Nashville.
TCU 41 – Texas Tech 27
Solid win here for the Frogs, as the offense shows up. Patterson and TCU are back in the postseason after missing out last year.
West Virginia 37 – #20 Baylor 28
Yikes Baylor. WVU claims another ranked win this season, proving they can compete with the better teams in this conference. This one really stings for the BU season-long resume.
Michigan 25 – Indiana 18
Michigan holds on for a touchdown win in the Big House in a very Big Ten looking game. Hoosiers are confirmed a good team with this close loss.
Minnesota 15 – Northwestern 10
The Gophers have beaten the Cats two straight now, as Minnesota defends home turf in another very Big Ten looking game. Fleck beats Fitz in a battle of seven win teams.
Virginia Tech 37 – Duke 18
The Hokies are looking to be heating up, as they get to 7-4 on the season with an impressive road win. The offense is starting to click much better than it did earlier this year.
Stanford 47 – California 32
Stanford is sneakily scorching hot, as they take down their rivals in the Big Game.
Marshall 30 – Charlotte 28
The Thundering Herd win the Conference-USA East division for the first time in six years. Charlotte put up a fight though, and are trending in the right direction for sure.
Boston College 31 – North Carolina 30 (OT)
The Heels were oh-so-close to being ranked coming into this one. Not anymore. Eagles play their best game of the season by far.
San Diego State 32 – Fresno State 22
SDSU paces this game from the start, as they capture the division crown over the Bulldogs.
Week 12 is in the books, and with the season rapidly winding down, be sure to keep posted for all updates down the stretch!
